Tyler Cruz is a young entrepreneur who makes his living solely through the Internet. TylerCruz.com is his personal blog where he talks about his journey to wealth.
We approached Tyler with the prospect of updating his blog because he was using a free theme that had been heavily modified and had a number of issues. When Tyler agreed to work with us, while he wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted, there were a few major issues he outlined as problems with his existing design:
- The largest issue with the current blog was the width of the content area. Tyler needed a lot more space to work with, so one of the chief concerns for the new design was providing as much space for content as possible.
- Tyler’s second concern was standing out. Blog re-designs are all the rage in the niche that Tyler blogs in, but many of the new blog designs follow a similar style and don’t really stand out. Tyler wanted his new design to stand out and be a cut above the other blog designs out there.
- Finally, Tyler wanted to add a bit more room for monetization on his blog than the current design allowed.
Tyler was a unique challenge, because he had very little idea of what he wanted specifically - but he had extremely high standards for the final product. Fortunately, the talented design team at Reality Hosting is up to any challenge!
Since Tyler really had no clear idea what he was looking for in the new design, we started by developing a basic layout idea for the flow and navigation that the design would follow. We decided on a three column layout, keeping the two outer navigation columns as small as possible. This maximized the amount of space available for the heart of the site, which was Tyler’s content.
This new layout increased the post area width by about 1/3rd, giving Tyler all the room he could need for his blog posts. Now that we had a layout idea which would solve the major issue with the old design, it was time to start working on developing the design for the blog.
We went through several concepts before settling on one Tyler really liked. We needed a design that was completely unique and everything Tyler wanted, so we kept on designing until we came up with a concept that everyone was happy with. We worked with a custom illustrator who developed the stylized mascot that is featured prominently on the design, and blended different logo elements into the design.
Now that the content width issue was taken care of and we had a unique, stunning look, we continued to work with the navigational concepts that we had come up with during the design process. In the end, we split the navigational items to the right column while the left column was set up as advertising only.
This resulted in providing Tyler room to add six 125×125 banner ads, in addition to his existing advertising. He started them off at a fairly low price, and they sold out a few days after the design went live. The banners have already added an additional $90 per month to his advertising revenue, and it’s likely that number will be much higher in the near future, when he raises the prices up to where they should be for a blog that has an audience like he does.
Tyler’s blog re-design was a complete success, and his regular readers had nothing but praise for his slick new theme. Here’s what Tyler had to say about working with us:
“What makes Reality Hosting stand out from the rest is their professionalism, their commitment to quality customer service, and truly caring about their clients that goes above and beyond the competition.”
